VIAREGGIO

Viareggio was born in the first half of the sixteenth century and was the only outlet to the sea the Republic of Lucca had. One of the oldest buildings in Viareggio is the Matilde tower erected by Viareggio citizens in 1541 to defend themselves against the constant threats of raids by barbarian pirates. Viareggio is also known for the Carnival which began in 1873, with its imposing papier-mâché carriages that parade along the whole promenade. The typical mask of the carnival is the ‘burlamacco designed by Umberto Bonetti in 1930. Viareggio is also a beautiful tourist town in an Art Nouveau style, consisting of a coastline and surrounded by beautiful shops, cinemas, restaurants and beach resorts. Its beautiful pinewood forest is also very appealing both for long walks surrounded by nature but also as a childrens play area. Viareggio is also widely known for his shipyard.
